Rejoice, for today is a new day, and the beginning of a season to celebrate!  This is indeed a new day.  For today we begin a journey, a journey to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Son. Let us set our minds on the God of Love and prepare our hearts for God’s great gift.  Amen.

Lighting of the Advent Candle of Hope

The Candle of Peace

1st Reader:
Today we light the candle of peace. Peace. It is what God wants for the world. It is what God wants for you and me. It is, indeed, the very shape of life that God intended from the beginning.

2nd Reader:
But peace has been broken. It has been broken between brother and between sisters. It has been broken between children and parents. It has been broken between virtually all groups of age, race and gender. Peace is broken between nations and cultures. We long for peace in our lives.

1st Reader:
We light this candle today as a small flickering light of hope in the darkness.
This one small light is a reminder that he who was born into the world to bring healing and salvation also bore the promise of peace. Hear the words of the prophet Isaiah.
His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.

2nd Reader:
Let us pray. Dear God of Peace, as we anticipate the birth of the Prince of Peace, may this candle remind us that we are called to be peacemakers and called to share the good news of the peace of God which passes all understanding, the peace which will guard our hearts and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen
